Senior Project Reflection

PART I: Two-Hour Presentation
(1) Two-Hour Presentation Student Assessment
I think I deserve a P+ for my two-hour because I followed the guidelines of the contract and turned in the lesson plans on time. I knew my content and gave many examples so the students watching my presentation would understand what I was explaining clearly. According to a few of the juniors who watched my presentation they told me I deserved an AE because I made complicated subjects understandable, but I feel like I deserve at least a P+.
(2) What are you most proud of in your 2 hour presentation and why?
I am most proud of my activities a lot of planning went into them. I made sure they required the students to use everything I had taught them previously. The activities were successful and checked for the students’ understanding. If someone didn’t understand something during the activity I would address it and give them an example that would help them understand what was being taught before moving on to my next answer.

PART II: Overall Senior Project Experience
(3) What do you think you did well on in the project? What could you have done better? Please explain.
In the whole senior project, I felt like I did a great job on my research. A lot of books or articles out there about editing are mostly tutorials so I was very limited on the books I could use. Despite that I would spend a lot of my time looking for books in libraries, online, in stores about video editing that way I had a sufficient amount of research sources. Finding professionals in the field to interview was hard but I think I did extremely well finding them. It took me half of the year to finally get an interview with Nina Gilberti, the editor at Criminal Minds, but I did end up getting it. I was persistent and didn’t give up. Editors are hard to come across so I think I did exceptionally great finding interviewees. I think I could have found another service learning mentor besides Mr. Duarte. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed helping him teach his class and being able to show his students everything I had learned through my senior topic, but I still think maybe shadowing someone in the actual field would have helped. Like I previously stated, editors are busy people and most of them for interviews would cancel on me last minute or never contact me back but I personally think I should have started looking for service learning during the summer. So I could have been much more prepared.
  1. What is your EQ and what is the best answer to your EQ?
What is most important for an editor to have to effectively assemble a video sequence?
My best answer is being able to create the effect of storytelling based on shots because if you know who the scene should revolve around you are able to cut the scene to focus on said person. Each shot is chosen to enhance what a character is saying or doing so to be able to choose the correct shot an editor needs to know what the scene is about and what is really going on underneath. This gives the scene and the characters depth.
(5) How has the last month of culminating events (e.g I-Search, Two-Hour, Exit etc) affected your answer to your EQ? Has it changed? Why or why not?
Well, in that past month my essential question changed from, “What is the most important skill to hone when preparing for a career as a broadcast news editor?” to “What is most important for an editor to have to effectively assemble a video sequence?” It was the Three Column chart that prompted the change. Originally my first EQ was more focused on the career aspect of editing rather than the art itself. I feel like my new EQ helped me focus my three answers much more and better suited my overall project.
(6) What suggestions do you have in order to improve the senior project?
The project itself is fine, the only thing I have to say is in the last two months things were out of control deadlines were piling up and raising my stress levels. The week of prom we originally had three deadlines so I was stressed out of my mind. Also for model assembly the teachers could be much more clear up front on how many sources are needed. I remember my house found out the week before that we had to have specific sources and were under a lot of tension.
(7) Overall Senior Project Assessment
Overall, I feel like I deserve an AE because really did put a lot of effort into this project. Service learning took over my life Mondays through Fridays and my weekends were dedicated to finding books or sources that could help me answer my EQ. I put a lot of effort into every single component and completed them to the best of my abilities. All the information I acquired through out the year I made sure to incorporate it into my 2 hour to give my presentation depth. I turned in all my components, put a lot of effort into completing them, and I was able to multitask with everything I had going on this year, so I do believe I deserve an AE.

Interpretive
What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?

Well, the two classes I help out in were beginners courses so I was able to watch these kids start off not knowing anything to having a decent amount of knowledge. Mr. Duarte also allowed me to lead his classes a couple of times and teach his students amount my findings.Applied
How did what you did help you answer your EQ? Please explain.

My service learning helped me answer my EQ by allowing me to distinguish what was most important for Mr. Duarte's students to learn in order for them to understand the media. At first it was the students learning how the programs worked, but then it evolved to them knowing how to put a video together that made sense. It helped verify my answers.

Lesson Plan

Sponge Activity  Tell me what you plan to do.
1. What is the activity: Identifying the Wilhelm Scream
2. How it will be done: There will be a compilation of scenes from movies that contain the Wilhelm Scream and every time the students hear the scream they will have to clap once.
2. How the activity relates to answer: It is a signature editors use to say I did this work. It goes with my second answer continuity.
3. All materials for activity: Projector and speakers 4mins

Introduction:  Tell me your EQ, breakdown the words in your EQ, why you chose the topic and plan for the day
I will introduce my senior project topic and myself. I will have a slide in my PowerPoint with the agenda. I will tell them what my EQ is (What is the most important skill for an editor to have to effectively assemble a video sequence?) I will tell them what an editor’s job is and  a little  about broadcasting journalism. I will explain to them what effective means when it comes to editing. 6mins.

Foundation:  Write what you plan to say for this part.
I will tell the class about the process a story goes through before it gets to an editor. I will talk about the difference between linear editing and nonlinear editing. 15 mins

Body:

Answer 1: What is it?
Storytelling: I will be speaking to them about how editing creates the effect of story telling. I will be explaining to them what is effective story and what isn’t.

-----Activity 1:  Describe in detail what you plan to do
Telling a story based on the shots

1. What is the activity: I will have a description of a scene and some of the lines from the script and
2. How it will be done: I’m thinking of giving each group sheets of paper with different types of shots (ex: close up, over the shoulder, medium shot, long shot, etc.) and as I put an example of a scripted scene they will have to say what shot they would use and why.
2. How the activity relates to answer: This gives the students the opportunity to tell a story based on the shots they pick.
3. All materials for activity: Computer and projector

Answer 2: What is it?
Continuity: I will explain what the Webster definition is and what it means in relation to my senior project. How I came across this answer and how I found out new information about it. I will be speaking about why it is important.

-----Activity 2:  Describe in detail what you plan to do
How to create continuity:
1. What is the activity:  Given a few shots, an editor can suggest many different scenarios.
2. How it will be done: I will give students a few shots of a scene and they will have to arrange the shots in a different order to tell a different story.
3. How the activity relates to answer: When hundreds of scenes and takes of scenes are available to an editor, which is normally the case in dramatic productions, the editor has tremendous control over the basic continuity and message of the production.
4. All materials for activity: Projector, storyboards
Answer 3: What is it? (if needed)
Working with the script supervisor: A script supervisor is the only connection and editor has to the people on set. The script supervisor  provides a special script to the editor that contains notes that advise the editor on what takes were good and which were bad.
-----Activity 3:  Describe in detail what you plan to do
1. What is the activity: Teaching the class how to read a script supervisor's notes.
2. How it will be done: I will have an example of a line scripted page with the wiggly lines and the straight lines and I will teach the class on how to read all the notations a script supervisor does.
3. How the activity relates to answer: An editor uses the script as a guide when assembling a video sequence so this activity will put the students in the shoes of an editor.
4.All materials for activity: Projector, computer

Conclusion
What is your best answer and why?--answer this
Storytelling is by best answer because without it there is no point to the video. Without it there is nothing but raw footage, editing is storytelling.

What is your 3 most important sources and why?--answer this
1. My interview with Nina Gilberti, she taught me a lot about storytelling and let me shadow her over spring break.

2. Service learning with Ernesto Duarte, being able to lead his class I was able to teach his students things I've learned throughout my senior project and make them simple that anyone could understand what I was talking about.

3. Script Supervising and Film Continuity By Pat Miller: This book taught me the importance of continuity and what a script supervisor does and how they work with an editor.

What is your product and why?----answer this
From this experience I’ve learned to network. It was really hard for me to find interviews I had many that didn’t work out but the ones that did were successful and I learned a lot from my interviewees.

(a) Statement saying: “I, student name, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”
I, Jeannette Martin, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.

(b) Explanation of what you completed.
I completed a total of 176 hours of service learning at Fairgrove Academy. During those hours I helped the students from Mr. Duarte's sixth and seventh period class. I was basically a teacher's aid. I went around the classroom and helped students with their projects. There are about 30 kids in each class and for many of them this is their first year taking this class so they find it challenging. So I helped many of them understand how to operate programs such as imovie, garageband, iphoto, windows movie maker, and how to use a camera.

Interpretive

Defend your work and explain how the significant parts of your component and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work.

Applied

How did it help you answer your EQ? Be specific and use examples

There were times where Mr. Duarte allowed me to teach the class things I've learned through my senior project. For example how to use shots in a video sequence. Many of the students don't know how to use them, so I was able to teach them what they are and how to use them properly. A lot of my research is very complex and sometimes very hard to explain. So by being able to teach my information to a class of sixth graders I was able to  make everything easy to understand and it has helped me prepare for my 2-hour. My Service Learning has helped me answer my EQ by being able to test out my answers and make them as accurate as possible.

Interpretive

Defend your work and explain how the significant parts of your component and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work.
importing is usually what takes a lot of the time cause you look thrrugh the footage and select what you would like to import. A lot of the time the video formats and size are too big that it takes forever to import. After that editing takes a great deal of time since trying to be precise in your cuts takes time and patience.
Applied
How did it help you answer your EQ?  Be specific and use examples.

This helped answer my EqQ because it is helping me become a better editor and it allows be to see my strengths and my weaknesses as an editor. It also provides a creative outlet.

20 Minute Presentation Rough Draft

Objective: To answer my essential question: What is the most important skill to hone when preparing for a career as a broadcasting news video editor? Also provide information that is completely overwhelming to the audience.
Procedure:
  1. I will greet the class and introduce to them my project topic along with my essential question.
  2. I will ask them what they think and editors job is.
  3. I will pick on 2 to 3 students to ask them what they think the answer to that question is.
  4. I will give them my definition of what I think an editors job is based on my research and what my interviewees have told me.
  5. I will have a slide dedicated to an over summary of what I will be presenting. Like a schedule.
  6. I will present to them three answers I have come up with to answer my EQ.
  7. After answering my EQ I will start my activity
  8. For the activity the students will be creating a short video script based on the treatment I give them.
  9. I will give them about 5 minutes to prepare and I will have at least 2 groups present their video script.
  10. I will give three meaningful sources.
  11. I will conclude my presentation with a quick summary about the importance of knowing how to use video scripts and why they are important.
Check for understanding:
I will check for understanding based on my activity.  Once they present their video scripts, I will be able to see if they understand the importance of a video script and how an editor uses it to create their video segment based on how well they grasped the idea of how to create a video script.
  • Resources/Materials:
    • Laptop
    • Projector
    • Light
    • Projector Screen
    • print out the treatments and the video script format per group

Ten Hours SL Check

Where are you doing SL?  No personal info...just general, please.
For Service learning I am helping out at My old middle school Fairgrove Academy. They have a broadcasting journalism class there. How many hours have you completed?
Well by the Ten Hour check I had 16 hours but currently I have about 37.

What kinds of things are you doing, and what have you learned
I help the students complete their projects. I help them edit, give them advice about how they can go from one shot to another without it looking choppy. Mr. Duarte is also teaching me how to use Final Cut Pro more effectively and he lets me use his old books he has about editing. So from those books I've learned more about linear editing and how we made the transition from linear to nonlinear editing.
